The Ketogenic Diet’s effect on the Brain

In the 1920’s the Ketogenic Diet  was developed as a cure for epilepsy. Studies found numerous amounts of success among pediatrics especially. The idea is that the diet adjusts how the brain uses sugar. That being said with its effect on epilepsy, what effect can the ketogenic diet have on other forms of brain damage and diseases?

Two studies were conducted on the diets effect on an aging rat brain in order to see its effects in comparison to a brain with Alzheimer’s and the diets effect on someone with brain damage.

Both studies showed cognitive improvement in the subjects and in the case of the subject with brain damage, existing neurological cells were able to be protected from further damage and new cells were able to rejuvenate.

In relation to Alzheimer’s, a study was conducted to find the cause of it. It revealed that Alzheimer’s develops in part due to the brain’s inability to transport glucose. A  Glucose transporter defect is also the primary cause of a condition known as Glucose transporter type I deficiency syndrome (Glut-1DS). According to the Charlie Foundation website the most effective treatment for Glut-1DS is the Ketogenic Diet.

The Ketogenic Diet as a cure for Epilepsy

The Ketogenic Diet, a high fat low carb diet growing in popularity among nutritionists and dieters alike most notably for being used by comedian Gabrielle Iglesias who took a fast food approach to the diet and lost over 100 pounds. However the origin of its creation was not for weight loss but rather to cure epilepsy.

In the 1920’s the Ketogenic Diet was developed to cure Epilepsy, however a lack of understanding by doctors forced the diet into near extinction being kept alive by Johns Hopkins Hospital. The diet works to change the sugar levels in your system and how your body uses sugars and carbs. This effects conditions like Glucose transporter type 1 deficiency syndrome, Myoclonic epilepsi, and Glycogenosis type V all share a common symptom of seizures.

In the 1980’s director Jim Abrahm’s son Charlie began the Ketogenic diet in order to combat his Epilepsy, after about a week into the diet his seizures became less frequent and he was cured two years later. Abrahm’s found the diet doing his own research and when it worked for his son vowed to spread the word of the Ketogenic Diet. The Ketogenic Diet and Cardiovascular Disease

According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC) one in every four deaths are attributed to Cardiovascular Disease annually. Statistics show growing rates in Cardiovascular Disease amongst Americans, one way to prevent Cardiovascular Disease is a change in diet.

The diet that works best has been debated, with an overall stigma over the consumption of fat in a diet, the Ketogenic diet has all been ruled out. However, examining the causes of cardiovascular disease and the benefits of doing the Ketogenic diet shows there is evidence that a Ketogenic diet may improve heart health as opposed to a low fat diet.

The Ketogenic Diet controls insulin, lipid and HDL (cholesterol) levels, studies show that triglycerides, HDL, and the ratio of the two, are much better predictors of heart disease.  The ketogenic diet reduces these factors while reducing the fat in your system as your body continuously uses it for energy.

Further evidence of the effect of the Ketogenic Diet on your body suggests overall improvement in health amongst users.

Fluffy loses 100lbs on a Low Carb Diet

Comedian Gabriel Iglesias infamously known as “Fluffy,” a self given nickname due to his size has just recently released a new comedy special on Netflix in which he talks about his recent weight loss of 100lbs and how he was able to do so eating nothing but fast food on a low carb diet.

Gabriel talked about how at a peak weight of 455lbs he was in danger of dying within two years due to bad diabetes if he did not lose weight and change his diet. After being denied any kind of surgery Fluffy attempted a low carb diet that would fit his life style. Whenever he would order food from a fast food restaurant he would order burgers but not eat the buns, ketchup or tomatos as they are very high in carbs. in doing so he was able to lose 100lbs in two years.

This diet is related to the Ketogenic diet, a high fat low carb diet thatcause rapid weight loss. Now the difference betwwen what Gabriel did and Keto is the amount of Fast Food eaten. In order to successfully do Keto you can eat fast food but constant consumption would delay weight loss due to caloric intake.

Overall Gabriel Iglesias lost the weight the same way people who do the Ketogenic diet do where instead of using carbs for energy, your body uses fat, therefore resulting in rapid weight loss.

Women and the Ketogenic Diet

Controversy surrounding the Ketogenic Diet has focused on the side effects of the people who take it but rarely focuses on the effect of each gender. Studies have shown that men and women experience weight loss very differently, in part due to the metabolic differences between the sexes and that women tend to carry more fat then men in general.

However, when it comes to a diet of vast weight loss like the Ketogenic diet, it is interesting to look into the effects it has on women, both the positive and negative. A study done on the effects on the Ketogenic diet had shown a great increase in health for both women and men not just in weight but in other elements of health too, in fact this particular study examined more women than men, (44 to 39 accordingly). Both genders showed significant weight loss in the six months the study was done.

With this success there also must be noted side effects of the Ketogenic diet. Focusing on women it has been noted that women seem to have irregular menstrual cycles that can eventually lead to being temporarily barren. Now, as serious as it seems this is merely temporary and the body will adjust as the diet is continued. Further, women have shared online the differences in diet between men and women and the different foods when should eat in order to stay in ketosis and not have to worry about eating too much meat and protein, meat having been known to have negative effects during a menstrual period and too much protein for women can impede on weight loss as they require less then men.

Overall the ketogenic diet provides a positive outcome for both men and women alike but it is important to eat according to your personal bodily needs. There are ways to remain in Ketoisis without sacrificing personal comfort .

The Keto Diet: Eatin’ Fat to get Skinny

The Ketogenic diet also known as Keto; a high fat, low carb diet slowly growing in popularity that goes beyond the common fad diet. Spreading globally through social media sites such as Tumblr and Reddit, the Ketogenic diet has caught the attention of many dieters with it being commonly known as the “bacon diet,” the Keto diet uses a high fat, low carb system for vast weight loss. A controversial diet that has been built upon since the 1920’s is slowly working its way into the mainstream, most noticeably by the Atkins diet, a form of Keto.

Lyle McDonald wrote a complete guide to the Keto diet, explaining in depth the science behind the diet to achieve weight loss with maximum results.

McDonald describes the Keto diet’s success by the bodies transition from using carbohydrates for energy, to using Ketones stating: “Ketone bodies are a by-product of the incomplete breakdown of FFA in the liver. They serve as a non-carbohydrate, fat-derived fuel for tissues such as the brain.” Being on a low carb diet causes your body to enter a state of Ketosis in which the body uses Ketones and fat for energy instead of the standard carbohydrate.

A major part of the controversy stems from common misconceptions about the diet, many people feel that because of its nickname “The Bacon diet,” it projects the idea that you eat as much fatty foods as you want to lose weight. However, like any diet you must stay within a calorie limit as well as a carb and fat percentage in order to successfully lose weight or conversely to add surplus in order to gain weight for those who wish to gain lean mass. Yes, you can eat bacon and various other meats and lose weight but it is recommended that you eat some greens too.   For more information on Keto visit Keto specialized websites or for those who are currently using Keto and are struggling watch this informative video on the common mistakes of Keto:
