Molloy Men’s Lax Starts Season with a Win

The Molloy College Men’s Lacrosse team started their season off strong with a win over up and coming Assumption College by a score of 13-12. The men’s team was anxious to show the division two lacrosse world what they were capable of under first year head coach, Bernard Dell’Aquila. Molloy College athletic director, Susan Cassidy-Lyke, had a few words about Coach Dell’Aquila taking the reigns,

“It was terrific to see Coach Dell’Aquila get his first win as head coach. We are excited about the direction he has the team moving in. He has made the transition to head coach very smooth and we are confident that the players will respond accordingly”.

The men’s team is looking for new players to step up and replace the talent that graduated the previous spring. Jon Camposa, a red shirt junior, was one of the players on Saturday to step up and answer that call. Camposa netted the ball four times and added an assist to have a game high five points. When asked for a comment regarding the performance of his teammate, senior captain Austin Valenti had this to say,

“He was playing at a different speed than everyone else, it seemed like he was always one step ahead of everyone on the field”.

Freshman Mike Durkin, made a definitive statement as a player to be feared on the defensive end accounting for five ground balls and three caused turnovers. Fellow underclassman, goalie Ryan Toomey, picked up right where he left off last season between the pipes tallying eight saves and earning his first win of the season. The Assumption Greyhounds went back and forth with The Molloy Lions until the final ninety seconds. Being a team led by underclassmen, the young attack duo of Travis Reid of Raynham Mass, and Dan Farrell of Norwood Mass, put the ball in the back of the cage four times respectively.

The Lions of Molloy look to continue to quiet the doubters whom feel they missed their opportunity to do something special in their conference next week, Saturday, February 27th. The white and red will be hosting the Cardinals of Wheeling Jesuit University at John A. Darcy Field. Start time for that game is at noon. The Assumption Greyhounds look to bounce back and get their first win of the season on Saturday, March 5th, when they host the Lions of Dowling College. Start time for that game is at 2:00 p.m.
